The Soul System

Every Elyvie character is driven by a 'soul file' — a rich narrative document that defines who the character IS, not what they do. Each soul contains the character's identity, daily rhythm, speech patterns, emotional logic, and relationship progression. This is creative writing, not prompt engineering — it's why characters feel like real people.

Unique Identity

Name, age, job, living situation, contradictions — every detail is handcrafted to create a believable person.

Natural Voice

Technical FAQ

What AI model powers Elyvie characters?

Elyvie uses advanced large language models to power character conversations, with a separate lightweight model (Claude 3.5 Haiku) for memory extraction and summarization. The exact models may be updated as technology improves.

How does the memory system work technically?

Short-term memory creates rolling summaries of older messages using a lightweight AI model. Long-term memory extracts structured facts (name, preferences, events, relationships) at session boundaries and stores them in the database. Both are injected into the system prompt for each conversation.

Are conversations really private?

Yes. Conversations are stored encrypted in our database, scoped to your user account. We do not access, review, or use conversation content for any purpose other than powering the AI response and memory system.

How do relationship stages progress?

Stages are primarily keyed to message count in the conversation. The system provides stage hints in the system prompt, and the character's soul file defines how their behavior changes at each stage. There is no paywall — progression is organic.

How does photo sharing work technically?

Characters use two marker types in their responses: SEND_MEDIA for free pre-uploaded content, and GENERATE_IMAGE for AI-generated photos. The system checks for pre-uploaded media first (free), then falls back to AI generation (2 credits). One media per message is enforced.

What happens if the AI model or memory system has an error?

All memory operations are non-fatal. If the memory system fails, chat continues normally without memory context. If AI generation fails, credits are automatically refunded. The system is designed to degrade gracefully.

How are voice calls processed?

Voice calls use real-time text-to-speech powered by ElevenLabs. The AI generates text responses which are converted to speech in real-time. Calls support 6 languages with natural-sounding voices matched to each character.

Can I use Elyvie's API?

A public API is not yet available. Currently, all features are accessible through the web interface. We may offer API access in the future for developers.
